The global human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has called on the federal government to release 23-year-old student of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa, Aminu Adamu, from detention, over a defamatory statement against the First Lady, Aisha Buhari.

Naija News earlier reported that Adamu made a tweet in June 2022, writing in Hausa “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi” which means ‘The mother has got fatter by eating masses’ money’.

According to reports, the student was apprehended by the Department of State Services (DSS) within his campus on November 8 and was only allowed to speak to his father, Shalele Azare Adamu.

However, Amnesty International in a statement on Monday, condemned the arrest of Aminu, stressing he should be released from unlawful detention.

The global rights organisation urged the government to ensure that security officers who tortured the student are brought to justice.

The statement read: “His family and friends alleged that he was held incommunicado and subjected to severe beating, torture and other forms of ill-treatment.

“Since his arrest neither his family nor his lawyers have had access to him.

“There are strong suspicions that Aminu is being held in an unknown location in Abuja by Nigerian security operatives.

“Amnesty International calls on the authorities to release him from unlawful detention and ensure that all those suspected of torture and other violations against him are brought to justice. #FreeAminuAdamuMuhammed.”
