England manager, Gareth Southgate, has explained his decision not to start Phil Foden against the USA.

In a lacklustre match, the Three Lions and Americans tied 0-0, and Southgate came under fire for not using his top players when his side needed goals.

With a 6-2 victory against Iran to kick off their competition, England was eager to beat the Americans and secure a position in the round of 16.

However, the USA remained obstinate and often tormented England throughout the game.

Christian Pulisic of Chelsea missed the target with a powerful shot, while Weston McKennie of Juventus missed a golden opportunity.

The 1966 World Cup champions just need a point in their last match against Wales to advance to the knockout round.

Jude Bellingham was to be replaced by Jordan Henderson, but Southgate made the decision, which infuriated the supporters.

Only three substitutions were made by the England manager throughout the game, and two more were planned. The English boss noted that Foden has no experience with Man City playing in the centre.

According to Skyspsorts, he said,  “We wanted to change the wide areas. We didn’t think it was a game for Phil in the middle because he doesn’t play there for his club.”
