Australia’s First-Half Lead Secured Crucial Victory Over Tunisia

Australia defeated Tunisia with a win that was important for maintaining their chances of making it to the World Cup’s round of 16.

The Australians launched out of the gates with vigour and resolve, knowing that a loss would mean an early departure from the contest.

After 23 minutes, Mitchell Duke capitalised on their strong start by expertly flicking Craig Goodwin’s cross into the far corner to give them a 1-0 lead.

Finding the back of the net, Duke stunned a tiny group of Australian supporters at the Al Janoub Stadium, and however, temporarily silenced the harsh and unyielding support for Tunisia.

Graham Arnold’s men maintained composure to win their first World Cup match since 2010 despite being hissed and jeered at throughout by Tunisia supporters at the stadium.

They managed to stave off a frantic assault from Tunisia in the second half, with Youssef Msakni forcing Mathew Ryan to make a stop at his near post, albeit that came only a few seconds after Mathew Leckie just missed connecting with Goodwin’s cross at the other end.

As Australia dug in, Stoke City defender Harry Souttar put in a standout display, making many crucial blocks and tackles.

Australia will play strong opponents Denmark next, but with qualification still up for grabs after their humiliating loss to France in their first encounter.
