Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has slammed the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for awarding Cristiano Ronaldo a soft penalty.

Naija News recalls that the Black Stars of Ghana lost 3-2 to Portugal in their World Cup opener on Thursday at Stadium 974 in the city of Doha.

In the second half of the game, Portugal’s talisman was brought down by Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu, and the Five-time Ballon d’Or scored from the spot to give Portugal the lead.

Addo, in response to the penalty, claimed that the official gave Ronaldo’s appeal a swift decision.

Additionally, he questioned why the VAR was unable to see the incident before the penalty was given.

While speaking to BeIN Sport, the Ghanaian coach said “The referee gave a penalty which wasn’t a penalty – everyone saw that. Why? Because it is Ronaldo or something?”

When asked if he thought the foul was called because it was Ronaldo during the post-game news conference, Addo responded, “I think you’ve to ask the referee. I have no proof of that.

“We were playing the ball and then there was contact.

“I don’t know whether they weren’t paying or whether the VAR wasn’t paying attention.

“If you look at the replay, we played the ball, it was actually a foul against us.

“If somebody scores a goal, congratulations. But this was really a gift.

“Up to the penalty, everything was possible. Then the game got a little bit wild.”
