Amidst several negative reactions trailing the look of the redesigned N200, N500 and N1000, unveiled on Wednesday by President Muhammadu Buhari, socio-political activist, Reno Omokri has reacted contrary to others.

According to him, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and its Governor, Godwin Emefiele deserve some commendation for the initiative because the Naira has appreciated.

Naija News reports that Omokri who made the observation on the microblogging platform Twitter said the newly unveiled Naira notes were not redesigned for beauty but for economic and security reasons.

His comment is contrary to what has been observed by different quarters about the new look of the redesigned Naira notes.

Barely 24 hours after the President unveiled the redesigned notes in Abuja, several Nigerians including politicians have condemned the CBN’s move saying the notes were only dyed differently.

Naija News reported yesterday that Joining a host of others to react to the new look of some notes was 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) Omoyele Sowore, who took to Twitter and wrote: “CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele and President Buhari just played Nigerians over the fraudulent so-called redesign of the Naira. Nothing was redesigned, just a change of dye. Crooks”

Also, the spokesman of the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Daniel Bwala took to Twitter and also wrote: “The colour has changed, but the value to dollar is still the same. Renewed hopelessness.”

However, in the midst of all the reactions, the socio-political activist has a different stand because he noted that the CBN achieved exactly what they wanted, because not only did Naira appreciate, bandits were flummoxed.

He also said the dollar is powerful, but not beautiful, hence some kudos should be given to Emefiele and the CBN board and not hubris.

He wrote, “The Naira was not redesigned for beauty. It was redesigned for economic and security reasons. And it achieved exactly that. Naira appreciated. Bandits were flummoxed. The dollar is powerful, but not beautiful. Emefiele and the CBN board deserve kudos, not hubris!”
