"No Excuses, We Got Disorganized" - Messi Reacts As Saudi Arabia Defeats Argentina

Captain of the Argentina national football team, Lionel Messi has reacted to his team’s shocking loss to Saudi Arabia in their Qatar Word Cup clash on Tuesday.

Ahead of the Group C game, Naija News reports Argentina was the overwhelming favourite to win the game against Saudi Arabia.

However, after starting on the front foot courtesy of a Messi penalty goal, Argentina conceded two goals in the second half of the game and went on to lose the match which has now been dubbed one of the greatest world cup upsets.

Reacting to his team’s loss, Messi admitted that it is a “very heavy blow” but they would bounce back in their next game.

“It’s a very heavy blow, a defeat that hurts, but we must continue to have confidence in ourselves,” Messi said.

“This group is not going to give up. We will try to beat Mexico,” he added.

Speaking further, the striker admitted that they made some mistakes in the game and allowed the tension of losing to get the better of them but promised the next match would be a better outing.

“We know that Saudi Arabia is a team with good players, who move the ball around well and play a high line,” said Messi.

“We worked on that but we rushed it a bit. At 2-1 we got disorganized, we lost our performance level and started desperately putting the ball into the middle.

“There are no excuses, we’re going to be more united than ever before.

“This group is strong and has shown it before. We had not been in this situation for a long time. Now we must show that this is a true group.”

Rallying Call

Messi urged the players not to be demoralized by the outcome of the game against Saudi Arabia but to focus on the next two games against Mexico and Poland.

“This is the time to stick together, to turn the page and not think about what happened.

“We always said we were going to (try to) win every game and now more than ever.

“We have to go back to the basics of who we are. We have to think about what’s coming next,” he said.
