The Nigeria Police Force, Anambra State Command, confirmed there was an attack by gunmen during the weekend at the hometown of a former Governor of the state, Willie Obiano.

Reports had emerged that the assailants invaded the Aguluri community on Saturday, November 19, 2022.

A resident who shared details of the event with reporters said the gunmen engaged security operatives in a gun battle that lasted for about one hour.

The source, who pleaded to be anonymous, also told journalists that both sides recorded injuries.

Responding to the incident when contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, told Daily Trust that no police officer was injured during the gun battle.

He said the gunmen were cultists and that the police had arrested 15.

“The situation has been brought under control on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng.

“The deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations led police operatives to the scene and prevented the youth from attacking the police station. We have made some arrests, in fact, over 15 people, and recovered some dangerous weapons.

“Meanwhile, other means of resolving the conflict is in place, and that is to hear from the aggrieved youths.

“We have also intensified patrols in the area, aimed at enhancing peace and safety,” the PPRO said.
