Gianni Infantino To Remain FIFA President

FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, will remain as the president of the football body for the next four years.

Naija News understands that due to the lack of interest from other candidates, the 52-year-old was elected without opposition.

After the United States, Mexico, and Canada host the 2026 World Cup, the Swiss national will continue to serve as the head of football’s governing body.

Infantino is eligible to serve as FIFA president one last time in 2026, which means he may head the organisation until the 2030 World Cup as well.

Since he completed the unfinished term of discredited former president Sepp Blatter, the first three years of his leadership do not count towards the 12-year restriction established owing to a corruption scandal in the organisation.

Infantino faces two challenges, a FIFA-appointed commission chaired by the Indian Mukul Mudgal will examine Infantino’s integrity and eligibility, and Swiss special prosecutors are looking into three unauthorised meetings with Michael Lauber in 2016 and 2017.

It is unclear how the investigation is developing or if it has authority against the FIFA president as a private individual. The FIFA president has denied any wrongdoing.

However, Infantino still has to clear a FIFA-appointed review panel’s integrity and eligibility inspection, which will be led by Indian judge Mukul Mudgal.
