Mane Breaks Silence After World Cup Miss

Bayern Munich forward, Sadio Mane, has been ruled out of the World Cup in Qatar.

The absence of the Senegalese, after failing to recover from his injury, will be a big blow for his coach, Aliou Cisse, and his countrymen at the global tournament.

On November 8, Mane suffered a leg injury while playing for Bayern Munich, putting his chances of participating in Qatar in jeopardy.

Despite having a fracture in the head of his right fibula, Mane was selected for the Senegal team to compete at the finals in Qatar.

It was already known that he would not be ready to participate in Senegal’s first encounter against the Netherlands on Monday, but as things unfolds, the news was a b;ow for his countrymen.

And at a news conference, Teranga Lions team physician Manuel Afonso said “Unfortunately, today’s MRI says his recovery has not been as encouraging as we had hoped and we have decided to declare Sadio Mane’s withdrawal from the World Cup.”

More information on Mane’s injury, which needed surgery, was eventually provided by Bayern Munich.

“Sadio Mane underwent successful surgery in Innsbruck by Prof Christian Fink and Dr Andy Williams from London on Thursday evening,” a statement from the club reads.

“During the operation, a tendon was reattached to the head of his right fibula. The FC Bayern forward will therefore no longer be available to play for Senegal at the World Cup and will begin his rehab in Munich in the next few days.”

Senegal’s World Cup campaign gets off against the Netherlands on Monday. In Group A, they will have matches against the hosts Qatar on November 25 and Ecuador on November 29.
