Southampton has announced the appointment of Nathan Jones as the new head coach on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Naija News recalls that during the manager’s tenure at Stoke City, Jones’ reputation suffered, but on returning to Luton Town, he received a lot of praise.

However, his outstanding performance as a coach at Kenilworth Road has earned him the opportunity to take over the saints.

With Ralph Hasenhuttl fired, Southampton wasted no time in hiring Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan to join the Welsh Manager as first-team coaches on the south coast.

“I’m really proud to be given this opportunity,” he said while reacting to the appointment.

“I know a lot about the club from back in the days of The Dell, to coming here to St Mary’s, and it’s a wonderful football club.

“A lot of my family are Southampton fans, which doesn’t half help, and I feel really, really proud to be given the opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to getting started.

“Obviously, I wanted to manage in the Premier League, I’ve dreamt of that since I’ve become a coach or a manager, but this club in particular – because of how it’s run, because of the structure, because of how they look deeper than just results – really appeals to me,” said Welshman.

The Nigerian international, Joe Aribo, who transferred from Rangers to St Mary, made 14 appearances and scored twice while playing for Hasenhuttl.

The Welshman will now oversee the Super Eagles midfielder and be responsible for leading the Saints to success.
