INEC Under Pressure To Dump BVAS, Kabiru Gaya Preparing Grounds – Buba Galadima

A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has accused the senator representing Kano South Constituency, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, of being part of a plot against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Galadima said Senator Gaya is eating his last loaf of bread in the Senate.

“Listen to Senator Kabiru Gaya, who recently was on a national television telling the world that INEC must be given an alternative either to use or not to use BVAS because in his own constituency, Gaya, which is in the middle of Kano State, there is no network to transmit results.

“He is only preparing grounds for what they have designed because they know this election they have lost. He in particular is eating his last loaf of bread in the Senate,” he said.

The former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed that the electoral commission is under extensive pressure not to use Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for the 2023 general elections.

“I appeal to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to take note of some bad elements that want to smear his image when he leaves office,” he added.

Meanwhile, INEC has said it was unaware of the plans to remove its National Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

Naija News reports that INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voters Education, Festus Okoye, said that the Commission is not bothered about any rumour regarding its Chairman as it is focused on conducting a successful, free, fair and credible forthcoming 2023 general elections.

He stated that the appointment and removal of the INEC Chairman are constitutionally inclined, adding that the process and appointment is a very rigorous process.

Okoye said: “There’s pressure from Nigerians for the commission to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

“The appointment and removal of the INEC Chairman are constitutionally inclined. The process and appointment of the Chairman is a very rigorous process.

”The President makes a nomination which goes to the council of states, thereafter, it goes to the National Assembly for confirmation, before it comes back to the president who makes the appointment.

“The process and the removal of the chairman is also a very rigorous process. First , there must be an allegation and that allegation must conform to the provision of the constitution.

“Thereafter the allegation would be made to the president and the president will now approach the National Assembly asking the National Assembly to remove the chairman of the commission for infraction of the constitution.”
