Armed men alleged to be kidnappers have blocked the Enugu–Opi–Nsukka road, forcing motorists plying the road to park for over two hours.

According to reports gathered by Naija News, the incident occurred around a police checkpoint by Ekwuegbe in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of the state.

“We have been here since 7:15am. This road has become something else. They operate from Ekwuege forest,” a driver told the Whistler.

A stranded passenger disclosed that: “There is no vehicle moving to and fro since morning. There have been movements of police and soldiers towards the scene, but we don’t know the extent they have gone.

This comes days after some persons, among which were returning students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, were on Sunday kidnapped along the same road.

Reacting to the development, the Enugu State Police Command announced that investigations over the alleged abduction of the returning students along Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road on Oct. 23, 2022 have commenced.

The state police command’s public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made this known in a statement.

According to him, “Following the receipt of the report of alleged attack and abduction of some travellers at Agu-Ekwegbe community axis of Ugwuogo-Nike/Opi/Nsukka highway in the evening hours of 23/10/2022, the commissioner of police, Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani, has ordered the maximum deployment of operational and intelligence resources of the command to ensure adequate security on the said road, rescue unascertained number of persons allegedly abducted and arrest the hoodlums.”

The state police command, in a release by its public relations officer on Wednesday, said the kidnappers were being trailed.
