EPL: Cristiano Ronaldo breaks silence after Old Trafford Saga

Manchester United forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, has broken silence after leaving the pitch before the match ended against Tottenham on Thursday evening.

Naija News recalls that the Portuguese player stormed down the tunnel and refused to come on as a substitute when his side eased past Spurs at Old Trafford.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner sat on the bench for Manchester United’s game against Tottenham and observed as his teammates defeated Antonio Conte’s men 2-0 in what was arguably their best performance under Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo was seen strolling down the pitch and into the tunnel with a few minutes left in the game, visibly distraught over his lack of involvement.

Following this, the Dutch manager handled the situation with the support of the Club, and a statement was released to axe the striker from the travelling squad that was scheduled to play Chelsea this weekend.

Ronaldo intended to provide his own side of the story as he took to his Instagram page to write his perspective and noted that “respect” was a key factor in his choices.

“I haven’t changed. I’m the same person and the same professional that I’ve been for the last 20 years playing elite football, and respect has always played a very important role in my decision making process,” he said.

“I started very young, the older and most experienced players examples were always very important to me. Therefore, later on, I’ve always tried to set the example myself for the youngsters that grew in all the teams that I’ve represented.

“Unfortunately that’s not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment get’s the best of us,” he added.

“Right now, I just feel that I have to keep working hard in Carrington, support my teammates and be ready for everything in any given game. Giving in to the pressure is not an option. It never was. This is Manchester United, and united we must stand. Soon we’ll be together again,” said the Portuguese.

Ten Hag’s preference for quicker forwards who are more willing and able to push has made it difficult for Ronaldo to receive league starts this season.
