The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has, following a court order to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end its eight-month-old strike, announced a schedule for the resumption of academic activities.

In a statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council of the university that was made available to newsmen in Osogbo, OAU informed the students that academic activities will commence on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

The school management directed students to return to the Halls of Residence on Wednesday.

The statement read “The students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have been directed to return to Halls of Residence on Wednesday, 19th October 2022, while full academic activities will commence on Thursday, 20th October 2022 for the continuation of the 2021/2022 session.

“The decision was taken at a special meeting of the University Senate, which was held in Oduduwa Hall on Tuesday, 18th October 2022.

“On behalf of the Council and Senate of the University, we wish our students an uninterrupted academic session and a safe trip from their respective locations.”

Naija News recalls that ASUU had been on strike since February 14 over its demand for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

But the Court of Appeal had on October 7th, ordered the union to call off its strike before an appeal filed by the union could be heard.

Obeying the court ruling, ASUU had last Friday directed its members to resume work despite the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration not yet resolving its issues.
