PDP In Crisis Over Melaye, Bwala’s Appointment As Campaign Spokespersons

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been struck with a fresh crisis over the appointment of the former lawmaker, Dino Melaye and Daniel Bwala as the spokesperson for the party’s presidential campaigns.

Recall that the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on different occasions appointed Melaye and Bwala as spokespersons.

The crisis in the party is coming less than 24 hours before the commencement of the 2023 presidential campaign.

Melaye and Bwala were both former members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before defecting to the PDP.

The former lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District had returned to PDP in 2018, while Bwala joined the party in July 2022, a week before his appointment by Atiku.

A source that spoke on the crisis with Daily Independent said Melaye and Bwala’s appointment has caused disquiet in the party.

According to the source, chieftains in the party are angry with Atiku for ignoring loyal members to pick APC decampees who had attacked PDP at a time.

The chieftains who claimed that Melaye and Bwala lack the skills required for spokespersons added that the duo are trying to correct the bad statements they made about PDP in the past.

A leader of the party said Atiku after realizing his mistake decided to appoint the Commissioner for Information in Delta State, Charles Aniagwu, as one of his spokesmen, a move some of them still faulted.

According to the source, Atiku is not only battling with the camp of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike but also dealing with some chieftains in the party.

The source said, “How do you explain a situation where we have many loyal, die-hard PDP supporters who are media gurus yet Atiku chose to appoint former APC members who have no media experience as spokespersons?

“Look at the great job the likes of Segun Sowunmi, Kassim Afegbua, Umar Sani, Kola Ologbondiyan, and Buba Galadima did during the 2019 presidential election. They gave the APC and President Buhari’s media aides a good run for their money and today, many people still believe that Atiku won the election.”

The source added that a governorship candidate will not appoint Melaye as a spokesman.

He wondered how Melaye who had once told Nigerians that God forbid PDP to return to power, would market the same PDP to them.

The source questioned the appointment of Bwala who was rooting for Tinubu to win the APC presidential primary a few weeks ago, only for him to be appointed by Atiku.
