Why Church Of England Ban Desmond Tutu’s Daughter From Officiating Funerals

The late Desmond Tutu‘s daughter was banned by the Church of England from leading funerals due to her sexual orientation.

Naija News understands that the Anglican Priest, Mpho Tutu van Furth, in the Diocese of Washington, has been seeking permission to officiate the funeral of her late-godfather, Martin Keyon, in Shropshire.

However, the Church of England refused Mpho from leading the funeral in honor of her late grandfather citing her sexuality.

Speaking about the development, Ms. Tutu van Furth told BBC News that it seems really ”churlish and hurtful”, adding that it was a “difficult situation” for her.

The Church of England does not permit its clergy to be in same-sex marriage because its official teaching is that marriage is between one man and one woman.

However, the sister Anglican church in the US, The Episcopal Church, allows the Diocese of Hereford, and other priests to enter into gay marriages.

“Advice they give in line with the House of Bishops current guidance on same-sex marriage” one statement from the Diocese of Hereford said.

“We urgently need to make space for the conscience, space for pastoral care and space for love.”
