PDP Governor Risks Jail Term For Abusing Naira Notes In Public – [Video]

Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed has been captured on camera throwing some chunk of money to citizens while being followed by a mammoth crowd.

Naija News saw clearly from the viral video shared by Sahara Reporters, how the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor stood above his moving convoy waiving at the citizens while he splashed money on them from the top of the car.

The video has generated some reactions on social media as netizens likened the Governor’s act to the popular saying; ‘Feed the chicken to the brim so you can devour them sumptuously and satisfactorily.”

Governor Mohammed’s act, however, can be seen as a violation of the Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) act.

CBN’s Warning Against Public Spraying Of Money

Four years ago, the Nigerian government through the apex bank, warned citizens against the spraying of the nation’s current at parties.

The CBN insisted that those who flout this warning were at risk of a six-month jail term or a fine of N50,000.

The bank said it was absurd to use the Naira, a symbol of the nation’s identity and pride in that manner.

The Deputy Governor, Corporate Services Directorate, Mr Edward Adamu, stated this in his address in Abuja at CBN’s 2018 International Museum Day celebrations, Naija News recalls.

He said the CBN housed the Currency Museum, which explained the evolution of money in Nigeria from the pre-colonial era to the contemporary times.

He said the CBN hoped that through the activities of the Currency Museum, people would be sensitized on how to handle the naira properly among other things.

Adamu said “The Naira as a symbol of our national pride should not be sprayed or step on, should not be squeezed, defaced or stained.

“The naira should not be sold or counterfeited.

“Be a role model by neatly arranging the Naira in pouches, wallets or envelopes.”

On his part, the then Deputy Director, Currency Operations Department, Vincent Wuranti, said the way and manner people handled the Naira destroyed its life span.

He stressed that there is a need to respect the nation’s currency as a lot of efforts are put into its design and production.

According to him, “the different banknotes feature portraits of Nigerian heroes, agriculture, solid minerals and other things that illustrate the Nigerian culture and economy”.

Naija News understands that a Section 21 of the CBN Act 2007 states that the abuse of Naira such as squeezing, staining, writing, spraying and illegal sales amongst others are punishable offences.

According to the act, offenders are to pay a sum of N50,000 or serve a jail term of six months.
