Good morning Nigeria, welcome to Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Sunday, 11th September 2022.

The Unacceptable Number Of Out-Of-School Children In Nigeria

Since the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, disclosed that over 20 million Nigerian children are out of school over a week ago, this publication has been waiting for the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to contradict this stat or shed perspective. This is because as recently as three weeks ago, the minister was reported as saying that “At my 2020 annual ministerial briefing, I informed the press that we have reduced the number of out-of-school children from an estimated 13 million to 6.9 million. May I inform you that we have further recorded an impressive enrolment in the last one year, especially in some of the frontline states—Kano, Kaduna, Kastina, Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Rivers and Ebonyi States”.

The minister was invariably saying that the out-of-school figure he gave two years has further declined as a result of the intervention of the government. Now, UNESCO did not only stop at estimating the number of Nigerian kids who are out of school at 20.2 million children, it took a dig at Nigeria by citing the country as one of those “where no administrative data of good quality has been available for over a decade”. Perhaps, this may be the reason why Minister Adamu was out of sorts with his data. Many must have applauded him when he dropped that stat. Considering that the statement was made during the State House Ministerial Briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team, it has all the trappings of a calculated attempt to ratchet up goodwill for the administration.

‘How Queen Elizabeth Stopped Buhari’s Regime From Extraditing Umaru Dikko’

Elder statesman and Second Republic politician, Isyaku Ibrahim, has narrated how the late Queen Elizabeth helped stopped the extradition of a former Transportation Minister, Umaru Dikko, by the General Muhammadu Buhari-led (Rtd) regime in 1984.

Naija News recalls that on July 5th, 1984, in what is now infamously known as the ‘Dikko Affair’, the Buhari regime allegedly sanctioned the abduction and extra-ordinary rendition of Dikko, who served in the Shehu Shagari government toppled by Buhari.

Dikko was found with a Jewish doctor drugged and kept in a crate at Stansted Airport destined for Lagos State.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu, has urged the newly appointed chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Adolphus Wabara, to reach out to aggrieved members of the party.

Naija News reports that Ayu made the plea when he led the party’s national working committee (NWC) to visit Adolphus Wabara at his residence on Friday.

Recall that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and his allies have demanded Ayu’s resignation as a condition for resolving the crisis.

However, the PDP national executive committee (NEC) on Thursday passed a vote of confidence in Ayu and the NWC, despite calls for the resignation of the party chairman.

Speaking at the meeting, Ayu asked Wabara to reach out to the Rivers State governor and others over the crisis rocking the party.

The PDP national chairman also asked the new BoT chairman to ensure efforts are in top gear for the party’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.

Wike Mocks Secondus, Says No Amount Of Confidence Votes Would Save Ayu

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has said no amount of confidence votes would save the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Iyorcha Ayu from being ousted from the position.

Naija News reports that the governor made this known at the grand reception for over 90 defectors from various political parties into the PDP at the Isaac Adaka Boro Park in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Wike also mocked the former National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus for celebrating the vote of confidence passed on his successor, Ayu.

According to Wike, no amount of confidence vote can save the sitting chairman, noting that this is not the first time a sitting national chairman was removed after a vote of confidence was passed on him.

He maintained that all he wants is to make sure that the right thing is done.

He further challenged Secondus to come back home and mobilise support for the candidate he was supporting for the 2023 elections, adding that when campaign starts, people would know who’s in charge of Rivers state.

Ozigbo in his declaration, urged the electorate not to be deceived by those who will give them peanuts to but their votes and then make them suffer for the next four years.

The party chieftain urged the people to support Obi who he noted is the choice of a majority of Nigerians.

I Won’t Accept Chairmanship Of PDP Gov Forum — Makinde

Makinde stated this while commissioning the newly constructed Nwaobasi Estate Road and the Osaa Okea–Umuakatawom Road in Aba, Abia State.

The PDP Governor noted that the claim in some quarters that he had been appointed as the chairman of the forum is a lie.

Makinde said if they give him the position, he will reject it because there must be an order.

According to Makinde, if the chairman of the forum, the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal resigns, the deputy chairman of the forum, Okezie Ikpeazu is expected to take over.
