No fewer than five people reportedly died in a canoe mishap in Jigawa State yesterday.

Naija News reports that the tragic event was confirmed to newsmen on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu.

Shiisu explained that the victims include a seven-month-old child and four women all from the Guri Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking in Dutse earlier today, the PPRO said, “On Tuesday, at about 6 p.m., information at our disposal revealed that on the same date at about 4:30 p.m., four women and a child boarded a canoe from Nguru Yobe State to Adiyani village in Guri LGA of Jigawa State.”

He said the victims were already close to their destination when the tragic incident happened. The driver of the canoe reportedly managed to escape alive, while the passengers drowned.

Shiisu said people of the community responded to the situation and tried to rescue the passengers but that they were found dead.

The PPRO said the corpses have been evacuated and taken to Adiyani health facility and were certified dead by a Medical Doctor.

Shiisu gave the names of the deceased as Oneyaniwura Kasagama, 50, Lafiya Bulama, 40, Badejaka Kasagama, 40, Gimto Kasagama, 40 and Mai Madu Bulama, the seven-month old baby.

The PPRO said the victims were all residents of Adiyani village, adding that an investigation into the case had commenced.

Tinubu Visits Jigawa, Donates N50m To Flood Victims

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday visited Jigawa State to sympathise with the government and victims of the flood in the state.

Recall that at least 50 people were killed and over 8,000 people were displaced and houses were destroyed during a flood incident in August.

Tinubu stormed the state yesterday and sympathise with the people who lost their loved ones and belongings to the natural disaster.

Speaking on Tuesday during a visit to the state Governor, Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar, at the Government House in Dutse, Tinubu donated N50 million to the victims.

The APC Presidential candidate disclosed that the donation is just to relieve the victims and not to compensate them. He called for sustained prayers to end flood disasters in the state and the nation in general.
