An old video has been spotted online where President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the Goodluck Jonathan administration over its approach to negotiation with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Buhari before being elected into office in 2015 wondered why the Goodluck-led government would allow the industrial strike to run all through the year without resolving the issue.

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) then in an interview with TVC, had advised the administration in power to release the required fund for the union to end their strike.

According to Buhari, a serious government if they had N7 billion would have negotiated with the union to end the strike which ran through the academic year.

However, years after condemning the past administration, the Buhari government has failed to attend to the demands of ASUU, which has been on strike since the 14th of February, 2022.

Some of the demands of the union include the release of revitalisation funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.

There had been several negotiations between the Buhari government and ASUU which have been unproductive.

The lingering strike saw President Buhari issue a two-weeks ultimatum to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to end the lingering strike.

But, rather than end the strike after the ultimatum, ASUU extended the strike by four weeks, with students stuck at home for the past six months.
