NLC Gives FG Ultimatum To End ASUU Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State chapter, has given the Federal Government two weeks ultimatum to resolve its issues with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Naija News reports that the Lagos NLC Chairperson, Agnes Sessy stated this during a protest held in Ikeja, the state capital on Tuesday.

She warned that refusal to comply with ASUU demands could lead to a massive nationwide protest, similar to that of the infamous ENDSARS protest of 2020.

“If the Federal Government does not resolve the strike within two weeks, there would be a nationwide mass protest. In fact, the ENDSARS protest would be a child’s play,” Sessy said.

This news platform reports that the labour union had taken to the streets of Lagos to protest the ongoing ASUU strike.

Why The NLC Protest

Giving reasons for joining ASUU on a two-day, NLC National President, Ayuba Wabba stated that the protest is to urge the Nigerian government to resolve issues with ASUU and reopen the universities.

Speaking to journalists at the 18th NLC Rain School in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Monday, Wabba said: “The protest happening tomorrow (Today) is not a solidarity protest but a protest of NLC against government actions that lead to our universities being shut down and our kids staying at home instead of going to school. All the unions directly involved in the strike are NLC affiliates and their members are part of NLC.

“We have taken three levels of decision. First is the protest, which is going to be national tomorrow. After the protest, a three-day national warning strike will start, and if they fail to resolve the issues and bring back our kids to school, we go on indefinite strike. 

“That is the decision of our National Executive Council. And what will be helpful for them is to check the timeline we have given for them to resolve the issues. We are optimistic that they will be willing this time because we are also willing to get our children back to school.”
