The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has claimed that the presence of security agencies including the force assisted in the peaceful conduct of the governorship election in Osun State on Saturday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday confirmed the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the election.

Adeleke defeated the incumbent Governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola who contested under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Sunday after the end of the exercise, IGP Baba applauded security operatives for their comportment at Saturday’s governorship election.

The police boss in a statement released through the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the massive deployment of police operatives, specialised units, and other human and operational assets, including three helicopters and a couple of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for aerial surveillance was instrumental to the commendable exercise.

Baba mentioned that four adequately manned gunboats for the riverine areas and Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) were among the operational assets deployed for the election.

He said also that the deployment to the three Senatorial Districts of the state was to ensure swift responses to some pockets of electoral issues.

IGP Baba praised Osun State citizens for maintaining law and order during the process. He also thanked stakeholders in the conduct of the election for their role in collectively maintaining decorum and cooperating with law enforcement agencies.

He said officers displayed professionalism during the event which according to him helped to garner trust and ultimately led to the success of the process.

The police boss reiterated the forces’ commitment to improving its security mandate ahead of the 2023 general elections.
