The political godson of Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Adekunle Akinlade has emerged as the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 election in Ogun State.

Akinlade was announced by the Ogun State PDP chairman, Sikirullahi Ogundele after about two hours of a closed-door meeting with state executive members.

Akinlade was presented with his PDP membership card at the same event and is now officially the running mate to the PDP governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu.

Earlier, Naija News reported that Adekunle Akinlade joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State a few days after dumping the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He cited injustice among other issues for his decision to dump the APC for PDP after losing the APC’s governorship primary held in May to Governor Dapo Abiodun.

In 2019, Akinlade was the Ogun state governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) but returned to the APC in December 2019 after his defeat at the polls.

Speaking after the meeting with PDP leaders at the party’s secretariat along Okemosan, Abeokuta, Akinlade said the decision to run with Adebutu as the deputy governorship candidate for the next election was not easy to make but became a necessary sacrifice in order to save the people of Ogun State from maladministration.

The former House of Representatives member vowed to work all round the clock to ensure victory for the PDP in the coming elections.

He said, “This decision was not an easy one to take. It might not be the most popular decision to take, but I believe it is absolutely necessary. The maladministration in Ogun State requires that every sensible indigene of this state must be ready to make a sacrifice and must be ready to do whatever takes to change the course and the trajectory of government come 2023.

“In 2019, I ran for the governorship of this state under the APM and my brother and this great party, the PDP, stood by me and it reflected clearly in the result of that election. We will do everything we can to make sure that this party becomes victorious come 2023. We will work morning and afternoon, we will work at night. We will work round the clock. We have done it before in under 90 days; now we have seven months to do this.”
