Kuje Prison Attack: NCos Gives Update On Abba Kyari, Other VIPs' Location

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has disclosed that the former commander of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abba Kyari and other prominent Nigerians held in Kuje prison are still in the facility.

Naija News had reported that terrorists on Tuesday night invaded the Medium Security Custodial Centre and released not less than 600 prisoners including 15 Boko Haram commanders.

It was gathered that other inmates used the opportunity of the attack to escape from the facility.

Since the news of the attack broke, the whereabouts of some high-profile inmates at the Medium Correctional Centre were questioned by Nigerians.

Some of the high-profile inmates include former Plateau Governor Joshua Dariye and his Taraba counterpart Jolly Nyame, a former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan and others.

Some Nigerian took to social media to react to reports that Kyari was not seen during the morning prayers following the attack on the correctional centre.

Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, the NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, assured Nigerians that Kyari and other prominent inmates are in the facility, hale and hearty.

Umar also demised reports that Kyari had escaped from the facility following the invasion of the prison.

“This is also to confirm to the general public that DCP Abba Kyari and other VIPs held in the facility did not escape. They are presently in custody, hale and hearty,” the statement partly read.

The suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on February 12 for alleged drug trafficking.

Kyari, who was remanded in prison on March 28, is standing trial for alleged drug trafficking alongside four members of his former police unit.

He is also facing extradition proceedings over his indictment in an alleged $1.1 million fraud involving a self-confessed international fraudster, Ramon Azeez popularly known as Hushpuppi.
