OPEC Confirms Death Of Secretary General, Mohammed Barkindo

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has confirmed the death of its Secretary-General, Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo.

Naija News earlier reported that Barkindo died at about 11p.m on Tuesday at the age of 63. His tenure as OPEC Secretary-General was due to end on July 31.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, OPEC disclosed that Barkindo passed away on Tuesday night in Nigeria, adding that the tragedy is a shock to the organization.

The organisation said Barkindo was the much-loved leader of the OPEC Secretariat and his passing is a profound loss to the entire OPEC Family, the oil industry and the international community.

OPEC extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, loved ones and his home country, Nigeria.

The organisation also expressed sorrow and deep gratitude for the over 40 years of selfless service that Barkindo gave to OPEC.

According to the oil organisation, Barkindo’s dedication and leadership will inspire OPEC for many years to come.

His death came a few hours after President Muhammadu Buhari celebrated him for his good service during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.

Buhari had said: “You have indeed been a worthy ambassador of our country.

“We are proud of your achievements before and during your appointment at OPEC and the proud legacies you will leave behind.

 “Your time in charge of the affairs of OPEC has been a very challenging one for the global oil industry.”
