Tanko: Shehu Sani Reacts As Buhari Moves To Appoint Awoola As New CJN

Former Nigerian lawmaker, Shehu Sani has reacted to the news that President Muhammadu Buhari would swear in Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Naija News reported earlier that Justice Tanko Muhammad tendered his resignation letter on Sunday, declaring the judicial seat vacant.

Reports claimed that Muhammad resigned from the position over health issues.

Subsequent reports on Monday, however, revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari would swear in the next most senior justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the acting CJN today.

The developments are coming days after 14 justices of the Supreme Court wrote a letter to the CJN over the decrepit state of affairs in the court. In a leaked memo, the judges stated that the budget allocated to the judiciary has not increased in the past four years.

The justices of the Apex Court revealed that they decided to write Justice Tanko in a bid to preserve the dignity of the Judiciary.

Reacting, however, via his microblogging platform on Monday, Sani who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th national assembly said the replacement of the CJN should follow the already laid down rules.

Sani protested that irregularities must not be recorded in the process for the emergence of a new CJN, whether for political, religious or ethnic gain.

The senator tweeted: “The replacement for the CJN should strictly follow the laid down rules. There should be no jumping the queue in order to find a person who will fit into the political, sectional, religious or ethnic peg of the ruling establishment.”
