Mary Odili Trends Following Justice Muhammad's Resignation As CJN

Former Justice of the Supreme Court, Mary Odili on Monday trended on Twitter following the resignation of Justice Tanko Mohammed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

It was earlier reported that Justice Muhammad resigned from office on Sunday due to health issues, weeks after Odili left the Supreme Court after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.

Naija News learned that are plans to swear in the next most senior justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

This is coming days after 14 justices of the Supreme Court wrote a letter to the CJN over the decrepit state of affairs in the court.

In a leaked memo, the judges stated that the budget allocated to the judiciary has not increased in the past four years.

The justices of the Apex Court revealed that they decided to write Justice Tanko in a bid to preserve the dignity of the Judiciary.

Hours after Muhammadu’s resignation, some netizens took to the micro-blogging site to hail Justice Odili for her stance against the former CJN.

Others wished the former Rivers first lady had not left the apex court, stressing that she would have made a fine and hardworking CJN.

See some of the reactions below.

@Lloyd_Manasseh: “Former Chief Justice of Nigeria – Justice Tanko Muhammad ran the Judiciary like a thug.
Little wonder Justices like Mary Odili never agreed with his leadership style.

“May Nigeria never have such a CJN ever again.”

@kwudi_1: “Mary Odili would’ve made a fine CJN.Sad she was by design forced into retirement without attaining the position. The Nepotism of BUHARI’s govt destroyed every facet of this country. Alas! This give-away/awoof position don finally purges Santa Tanko,& now he must return to d North pole.”

@DaminaboEric: “CJN Justice Tanko Muhammad waited for Justice Mary Odili to Retire before he resigns.”

@je_mc2: “It’s a defenestration. His fellow justices are in open revolt against him, making him useless. It’s the right time too. Both his sons have tickets AND the feared Mary Odili has now retired.”

@Ogundeji_OLA1: “CJN Tanko’s health issue never started today, he understood the game, he made sure Mary Odili retired before he resigns, if he doesn’t play such card and Mary Odili gets to the seat as CJN then he’s gone forever.

@EririEgo: “The North and this anti-igbo game na 5/6, the ailing and corrupt CJN hung onto the position even with a failing health, until, Mary Odili retired, simply because they didn’t want to hand over to her as the next in line! Una dey reason wetin I dey reason so?

@WEchefula: “Nigeria deserves a Mary Odili as CJN. The woman was/is sound and experienced enough. The only problem is that Wike would jubilate more than Nigerians and the Odili family.

@frank_uriah: “Tanko Muhammad the retired CJN was brought in by Buhari to serve a purpose, he bastardized the judiciary and took every respect that is left there!

Justice Mary Odili would have made a better Chief Justice of Nigeria if not for Buhari and his high-handedness.”
