Ex-CJN Muhamamd To Recieve N2.5bn Benefits, Sundry Allowances

Isah Ahuraka, the spokesman of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has confirmed that his principal has officially resigned.

Recall that Justice Muhammad had earlier resigned his appointment as the Chief Justice of the country on the grounds of ill health.

Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the second most senior judge in the Supreme Court, is set to replace Justice Muhammad as the new CJN, Naija News reports.

It is understood that Justice Ariwoola will be sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari on an interim basis.

In a short statement, Ahuraka confirmed that Muhammad has tendered his resignation letter in order to enable him to attend to his health.

He said, “The latest information is that the CJN has resigned; The CJN has resigned to enable him to attend to his health.”

This development is coming days after 14 justices of the Supreme Court wrote a letter to the CJN over the decrepit state of affairs in the court.

The judges also accused the CJN of going on foreign trips with his family while denying them the right to go on international training.

Some of the issues raised by the justices include — accommodation, vehicles, electricity tariff, supply of diesel, internet services to justices’ residences, training for justices and epileptic electricity supply to the court.

However, the CJN in a statement said he did not want to join issues with the justices, adding that the circulation of the letter is akin to “dancing naked at the market square”.
