Atiku: I Picked The Wrong Running Mate In 1999 – Obasanjo

Nigeria elder statesman and former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has narrated his experience about choosing a running mate in 1999.

Naija News recalls that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain won the 1999 presidential election and led the country through 2007.

Speaking about the process that led to the emergence of his Vice, Obasanjo who was interacting with some secondary school students at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State, said he made a mistake while picking his running mate during the civil rule.

Obasanjo said he selected the wrong vice but it was a genuine mistake in the end. Obasanjo said he made many mistakes in life but that God made him overcome them.

2023: ‘My Certificates Were Looted While In Exile’ – Tinubu

The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu has claimed that his school certificates were stolen by unknown persons during the military rule in 1990.

The former governor of Lagos State stated this in an affidavit submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as part of his eligibility filings for the 2023 presidential elections.

According to Peoples Gazette, documents released on Friday show that Tinubu left the columns for his primary and secondary education unmarked.

Tinubu, however, noted that he obtained a degree in business and administration in 1979 at the Chicago State University.

IGP Asked To Arrest Tinubu Within 48 Hours Over Certificate Scandal

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has been asked to arrest the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, over his an alleged certificate scandal.

Naija News reports that the Center for Reform and Public Advocacy (CPRA) made the call on Saturday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Speaking during a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, the Legal Adviser of the CRPA, Agu Kalu, urged the police boss to arrest and prosecute Tinubu for allegedly supplying false academic qualifications to secure the nomination.

Kalu threatened that should the IGP fail to act, court action would be instituted against him for an order of mandamus to compel him to effect the arrest of Tinubu at the end of the ultimatum.

He alleged that the former Lagos State governor was not legally qualified to become the next President of Nigeria in 2023 on grounds of supplying false information on oath in his form EC 9 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

2023: Allegations Against Tinubu Are Politically Motivated – Campaign Organisation

The Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organisation says the allegations that the Presidential candidate, All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, supplied false academic qualifications to secure his nomination are false.

In a statement on Saturday by the spokesman of the organisation, Bayo Onanuga said the allegations against Tinubu are politically motivated and being sponsored by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Onanuga also condemned the call by the Centre for Reform and Public Advocacy for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, to arrest and prosecute Tinubu for allegedly supplying false academic qualifications to INEC.

He stated that issues raised by the civil rights group in its petition to the police boss are unnecessary, stressing that the group was only bringing up issues where there were none.

Onanuga said that the former Lagos governor did not submit any fake certificate to the electoral umpire in 1999 as reported in the media.

PDP Speaks On Substituting Okowa As Atiku’s Running Mate

The Peoples Democratic Party on Friday ruled out the move to change the name of Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as the vice-presidential candidate of the party.

The timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) gives political parties the grace to replace candidates before the 15th of July, 2022.

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has remained silent and failed to congratulate Okowa on his emergence as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.

Wike has sparked speculations of dumping PDP following his meetings with the likes of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, David Umahi, the Governor of Ebonyi State, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

SSANU, NASU Extend Strike By Two Months

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) said the government has failed to respond positively to their demands hence the need to extend their strike action by two months.
The academic unions confirmed the extension in a circular to branch chairmen on Friday, June 24, Naija News understands.

The unions said in the circular that their pressing demands as relayed to the government at the Tripartite Plus meeting held on Thursday, 12th May 2022, with respect to the testing of our University Peculiar Personnel and Payroll System (U3PS) software with the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, has not been attended to.

It further noted that three payment solutions, U3PS, UTAS and IPPIS, are currently being subjected to daily tests which have spanned three weeks so far and are still ongoing.

2023: Use Your PVCs For Election, Not To Open Bank Accounts – INEC Chairman Tells Nigerian Youths

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has assured Nigerians that the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be ready for collection before the 2023 elections.

He gave the assurance on Saturday in Abuja during the Youth Vote Count concert at the Old Parade Ground, Naija News reports.

Prof. Yakubu however urged the youths to ensure the cards are used for the main purpose for which it is produced which is to vote during elections.

The INEC boss charged them not just to see the PVC as an identification tool for bank account opening. He added that those who recently registered to vote will collect their PVCs latest by October 2022.

2023 Elections: INEC Extends Continous Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

Naija News reports that INEC had earlier fixed June 30, 2022, as the deadline for the ongoing CVR ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Speaking on Saturday during the Youth Vote Count concert at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu said the exercise will continue until the citizens continue to register to obtain their PVC.

He stated that said the commission has deployed more machines for voter registration, adding that INEC will not stop the exercise until it is satisfied that Nigerians who want to register have done so.

Owo Attack: Akeredolu Orders Installation Of CCTV In Public Places

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has ordered the compulsory installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in public places across the state.

In a statement released Saturday by his spokesman, Richard Olatunde, the governor gave the directive following the signing of Executive Orders.

Akeredolu stated that he gave the orders pursuant to Section 176 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which vests in the Governor of Ondo State the Chief Executive powers of the state.

The governor stated that the decision became necessary following the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo and other parts of the state, adding that his administration would continue to ensure the security of lives and properties in the state.

Akeredolu said the executive order will be enforced at all religious places, financial institutions, event centres, supermarkets, educational institutions, hotels/motels, restaurants, clinics and health centres, among others.

2023: Peter Obi, Kwankwaso Yet To Agree As Panel Submits Report

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and that of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, are yet to agree on who will drop and become a running mate.

Naija News reports that the deadline for substituting candidates and running mates for the presidential and National Assembly candidates set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is drawing nearer.

This newspaper gathered that a joint panel set up by both political parties to work on the proposed alliance had submitted its report for consideration.

Speaking to The PUNCH, the running mate to Obi and director-general of his campaign organisation, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said Obi and Kwankwaso are yet to reach an agreement.
