Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Tuesday, June 7th 2022.

The PUNCH: An attempt by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Adamu, to select Senate President Ahmad Lawan – a northerner – as the preferred candidate of the APC, failed on Monday as both the Presidency and 12 northern governors of the party openly distanced themselves from the move. Adamu had summoned a meeting of the 25-member National Working Committee at the party’s headquarters in Abuja ahead of the presidential primary slated for Tuesday (today).

The Guardian: After yesterday’s ‘Night of the Long Knives’, members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are set for today’s national convention with politicking reaching feverish pitch, as the party grapples with task of choosing its presidential candidate. There was pandemonium following the purported endorsement of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the presidential flag bearer of the party. This jolted APC stakeholders, who stoutly resisted the position until calm was restored with President Muhammadu Buhari’s denial of joining party chairman, Abdullahi Adamu to endorse any candidate.

This Day: Ahead of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) special convention and presidential primary today, in Abuja, stakeholders in the party, including the progressive governors, yesterday, reduced the number of aspirants jostling to fly the party’s flag to five in order to properly manage the voting exercise.

The Nation: Ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday erupted in confusion over a purported ‘choice consensus candidate’ of President Muhammadu Buhari. Twenty-four hours to the convention, National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu sparked a row when he announced Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the President’s anointed.

Daily Trust: Spirited efforts to come up with a consensus presidential candidate ahead of today’s All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary collapsed last night, Daily Trust reports. Our correspondents report that the presidency, the APC governors and the leadership of the ruling party are not on the same page even though marathon meetings were being held to mend fences so that their differences would not manifest at the Eagle Square.

Thank you for reading, that all for today, see you again tomorrow for a review of Nigerian newspapers.
