A former coach to a number of Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) teams, Maurice Cooreman, has died at the age of 79 in his home country, Belgium.

In a tweet, Nigeria’s League Management disclosed the 79-year-old’s death writing: “Our condolences to the family of Maurice Cooreman following his passing in Belgium.”

“He will always be remembered as a legend in the NPFL, having played for a number of clubs and winning the title with Oceans Boys in 2006.”

In a coaching career that spanned decades, the Belgian had stints with Enyimba, Ikorodu United, Ocean Boys, Warri Wolves, and Gombe United.

Cooreman won the Nigerian title with the defunct Ocean Boys in 2006, but was fired in September and rehired two weeks later.

He was the manager of Enyimba from October 2006 to November 2008, and in April 2008, Bendel Insurance, Lobi Stars, and Gabros, as well as Kaduna United, were all managed by Cooreman.
