The National Assembly has reportedly transmitted the amended Electoral Act 2022 to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

Naija News understands that the act was sent to the President on Friday for assent after both chambers of the National Assembly amended the law.

The lawmakers particularly amended Section 84(8) of the Act to allow automatic or statutory delegates to participate in political parties’ primaries, congresses and conventions.

With the new amendment, Buhari, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, members of the National Assembly, governors and their deputies, members of the State Houses of Assembly, chairmen of local government areas, councillors, executives of political parties, amongst others, can now vote and be voted for.

However, a source in the Presidency has confirmed that President Buhari would sign the amendment before the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries.

He stated that the Presidency would announce when the amended Act will be assented to by the President.

The source told The Punch: “Yes, it has been transmitted. But wait till Monday when it may be announced when the President will sign it.”

Another source in the National Assembly said, “It was transmitted on Friday. I needed to confirm it before saying anything.”
