Deborah Samuel: Bishop Kukah Announces Suspension Of Catholic Masses In Sokoto State

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah has announced the suspension of masses in the state following the curfew declared on Saturday by the state government.

According to Bishop Kukah in a statement on Saturday, catholic masses are suspended until the curfew declared by Governor Aminu Tambuwal is lifted.

It will be recalled that the Soko State government declared a curfew on Saturday following the violent protest that erupted by some Muslims demanding the release of those arrested by the Police in connection with the gruesome murder and burning of Deborah Samuel for alleged blasphemy.

Following the curfew, the Bishop explained that services have been suspended and urged the people to pray for the quick return of peace and calm.

He also confirmed some of the destruction carried out by the protesters to include the Holy Family Catholic Cathedral where the Church glass windows were shattered, those of the Bishop Lawton Secretariat and also a community bus parked within the premises was also vandalized.

A team of Mobile Policemen were however able to disperse them before they could cause further damage.

“They were promptly dispersed by a team of Mobile Policemen before they could do further damage,” the statement noted.

“The hoodlums also attacked the Bakhita Centre located along Aliyu Jodi road and burnt down a bus within the premises.”

Kukah commended the state government and security forces for their prompt action in curbing the violent activities of the protesters.

Meanwhile, Naija News had earlier reported that Bishop Kukah while reacting to the trending claim that his house was burnt in the violence that erupted, denied the report.

“No, they did not burn my residence,” he stated.
