Malami, Amaechi, Others To Appear Before APC Screening Panel With Resignation Letter

Reactions have trailed the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to ask ministers with political ambitions to vacate their offices

Naija News reports that the Nigerian leader had asked all members of his cabinet running for elective offices to resign on or before Monday, May 16, 2022.

The Minister of information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made the disclosure on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided by President Buhari.

Mohammed disclosed that the President’s directive excludes Vice President Yemi Osinbajo because he is an elected member of the cabinet.

The minister asserted that any further directive will be disseminated accordingly, adding that the order might involve political appointees if the need arises.

Buhari’s directive comes hours after the Court of Appeal set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court in Umuahia which voided the provision of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022.

However, some Nigerians have taken to social media to commend the President for ordering ministers seeking elective offices to vacate their offices, while others said the minister should not have been asked to resign.

@OjoSamwum wrote: “He ought to have taken this directive earlier. This is coming too late. The President is only taking this decision after much pressure and based state governor’s action on their appointees.

@Emmanue41720182 wrote: “The president doesn’t seem to have a good grasp of what is going on and the issues. He seems to just be flowing with whatever he is fed with by the rave of the moment personalities around him.”

@AlhajiDNA wrote: “He always allow everyone to display their selfishness and ignorance to the public. Then he takes action. This has been his style. Baba is not sleeping. He knows exactly when and where to talk or take action.”

‎@Sir_franklyn wrote: “Better late than never. The whole atmosphere needs sanity. Dude has been sleeping for too long. Virtually all your appointees now feel they can do better than him, going about their presidential campaign forgetting what they were appointed for.”

@Benedictshawn wrote: “How market Ngige, Amaechi, Nwajuiba and Emefiele. I hope they will take this directive seriously.”

@Radical_No_one wrote: “When Malami resigns I’ll take this report seriously. For now, this order na cruise. Osibanjo suppose resign too but well he was elected so the order no reach em side.”

@_motoyosi wrote: “But are they supposed to be told? Constitutionally, they are supposed to resign before declaring any political intention.

@highlandre1 wrote: “Some are going to lose their ministerial portfolio and also lose primary elections altogether. If the primary election is not sure for you, you better withdraw your nomination form now.”

@uchebakaadi wrote: “Emefiele would he come off d gravy train now or maybe go to Supreme Court as money no be problem. The impunity of it all just shows how easy it is to disregard moral decency in our society.”
