2023: North Will Support Experienced, Competent Candidate From Any Region - Yerima

Former Governor of Zamfara State, Ahmad Sani Yerima says he has no regret in introducing Sharia Law in the state.

Naija News recalls that the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential aspirant established the controversial law in the state in October 1999.

Following the success of the law recorded in Zamfara, several Northern governors also introduced the law to combat corruption and other social vices in their states.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, Yerima reiterated his earlier position that Sharia law was in line with the constitution on the freedom of religion.

The former governor stated that Zamfara was crime-free during his time, stressing that Sharia law contributed to the low rate of crime in the state.

The APC Presidential hopeful disclosed that Christians in the state benefited from Sharia law when he was in government, stating that Sharia means justice, equity and fairness.

He said: “During my time if you check records, president Obasanjo declared in his government, that Zamfara state is a crime-free state. They said the crime rate in Zamfara at that time was 0.2 per cent.

“Sharia means justice, equity and fairness. Ask the Christians in Zamfara, they’ll tell you that at that time, they were better off.

“Recently when I declared in Abuja, the chairperson, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Zamfara, was there. And he told Nigerians what kind of benefits the Christians had. There was social justice, and there was development.”

In a related development, the former Zamfara governor said, he has done no wrong marrying a minor years ago.

Recall that Yerima caused stirs on and off the internet in 2009 when he dolled out a sum of $100,000 to marry a 13-year-old Egyptian teenager.

In an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, May 10, the presidential hopeful said no law in Nigeria dictates how and when one should get married.
