I Won't Interfere In Nnamdi Kanu's Trial, Buhari Tells Igbo Leaders

President Muhammadu Buhari says he will not interfere in the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The Nigerian leader made this known on Friday during a meeting with Ohanaeze Ndigbo and South-East leaders at the Ebonyi Government House in Abakaliki, the state capital.

President Buhari urged the Igbo leaders to allow the court to decide the IPOB leader’s fate and other Igbo youths in detention across the country.

The President reiterated that interfering in Kanu’s trial will be unconstitutional and contravene the powers of the Judiciary.

He stated that Nnamdi Kanu is among the non-state actors in the South East that have continued to incite the people of the region against his government.

The President, however, expresses deep concern over the wanton killings and worsening violence in the region which has claimed over a hundred lives.

Buhari declared anyone caught bearing arms especially AK-47 rifles and who is not a security officer should be dealt with appropriately.

He said: “I must register my deep and grave concern with regards to the deteriorating state of affairs in this region.

“I have listened carefully to various appeals from the Elders and Traditional Leaders regarding our wide range of options and as I have said previously, this matter remains in the full purview of the law court where it will be properly adjudicated.

“My worry is for our hardworking and innocent civilians for whom life is already tough and would like to go out and wean a good and honest living. There are many that fit this profile and the government owe them that obligation to protect their lives and property.”

Recall that the Nigerian leader had said in November last year that the call for the unconditional release of  Kanu is very heavy and difficult.

He made this known when he received an Igbo delegation led by former Minister of Aviation, Mbazulike Amaechi, at State House, Abuja.
