Umeh Speaks On Emergence Of Senate Principal Officers

A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator Victor Umeh, says the South East deserves to produce the next president in 2023.

The Igbo leader added that the region has been treated unfairly and marginalised since the return of the country to civil rule in 1999. He added that the South-West has produced both the president and the vice president for sixteen years.

He said that it would be an injustice for the South-East region not to produce the next leader of the country despite calls for all political parties to zone their presidential tickets to the South East.

The former APGA national chairman made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.

Umeh stressed that most easterners want the South-East region to produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor and the region has begun the push for an Igbo presidency.

He said: “It is an injustice. South-East has never produced President for Nigeria.

“Nobody from the South-East has been President, it is the turn of the South to produce President now. The way we have shared power over the years, you will see that the South-West has produced a president through Obasanjo democratically for eight years, now they have the vice president standing out for eight years with Buhari, then the South-South has produced President through Jonathan who has been there for nearly six years.

Speaking further, Senator Umeh said the South-East is united in purpose, refuting claims that the region is not united politically.

The APGA chieftain added that the people of the region will support an Igbo presidential candidate and the South-East agenda is for Nigeria’s presidency to come from the region.
