2023: Your Call For Interim Govt Unconstitutional – Shehu Sani Tells Afe Babalola

A former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has rejected a call by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afe Babalola to have an interim government in 2023.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain described the call by the renowned lawyer as unconstitutional and counterproductive to the country’s democracy.

Naija News recalls that Chief Babalola had advised President Muhammadu Buhari to postpone the 2023 general elections and set up an interim government.

He said the interim government should be in place for six months after the expiration of President Buhari’s tenure and should draft a new constitution that is people-oriented to replace the current 1999 constitution that is currently operational in Nigeria.

During a press conference on Monday, Babalola said the step will give the opportunity to correct some of the challenges such as insecurity and poor economy which Nigeria is battling with.

He argued that if the 2023 general election is allowed to hold as planned, then the challenges facing the country will automatically continue as the same crop of leaders will be recycled.

In a tweet via his Twitter handle on Tuesday afternoon, Sani said the country does not need any interim government in 2023 as suggested by the legal luminary.

The governorship aspirant said the citizens need a credible election and new leadership with a sound vision to unite, protect and rebuild this country.

He wrote: “Afe Babalola is a respected legal luminary & Elder; However, his suggestion is unconstitutional & counterproductive to democracy.

“We don’t need any interim Government. We need a credible election & new leadership with a sound vision to unite, protect and rebuild this country.”
