Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Thursday, April 7th 2022.

The PUNCH: The opposition Peoples Democratic Party is currently battling a crisis over the refusal of the southern and northern elements to agree on zoning, The PUNCH has learnt. Impeccable sources within the PDP told The PUNCH on Wednesday that the crisis was worsened by the absence of a defined leader, who could bring together opposing forces to reach an agreement.

The Guardian: Leaders of Southern and Middle Belt groups, yesterday, were enraged over the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to jettison zoning in the selection of the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, threatening to work against the party, if a Northerner is fielded.

Vanguard: Demands by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from the Federal Government, when he met with South-East Governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Leaders in Enugu shortly before the September 2017 military raid of his Umuahia family house, have been revealed.

This Day: Although the decision by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to throw its 2023 presidential ticket open, has not been sealed yet by its National Executive Committee (NEC), there are clear indications the party might compromise its otherwise bright chances in next year’s general election if it travelled that route.

DailyTrust: In 10 days, 11 female students of the Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri, in Kebbi State, would be clocking ten months in captivity following their abduction by a prominent banditry kingpin, Dogo Gide

The Nation: Following reports that PDP’s committee has recommended that zoning be jettisoned for a free contest by aspirants, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo said the move is meant to deprive the South, particularly the Southeast, of the ticket.
