14 Bodies Recovered In Niger Boat Mishap
The people and government of Niger State are in mourning following the recovery of 14 bodies from the Zumba-Guni River in the state.
Naija News understands that some locals who were fleeing from bandit terrorists during an invasion of their village drowned in the river following a boat mishap.
In a chat with Daily Trust, a resident of the area, Michael Madaki, disclosed that the bodies of four children and nine women had been recovered while the search for the remaining bodies was ongoing.
Meanwhile, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has described the death of the villagers as disturbing and painful, saying that his government would continue to protect the lives and properties of its citizens.
In a statement through his spokesman, Mary Noel-Berje, the governor directed the State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) to immediately commence a search and rescue operation for the remaining bodies of the victims.
Bello also directed the agency to also provide welfare support for the remaining fleeing villagers and appreciated the efforts and sacrifices of the joint security operatives in protecting the residents.
He condoled with the family members of the deceased and the entire people of Munya Local Government Area.
The governor enjoined the security operatives to be more proactive in their operations while decrying the continuous unprovoked attacks on innocent citizens in some communities.
He said no matter how hard the criminals sustained their atrocious activities, the government would remain steadfast and would not stop efforts to end criminality in the state.
