1. Senate Rejects Buhari’s Request To Delete Clause In Electoral Act

The 9th Senate led by Senator Ahmad Lawan on Wednesday rejected the request of President Muhammadu Buhari calling for a clause in the newly-signed electoral act to be deleted.

The lawmakers rejected the request of the president through a voice vote when it was tabled to be read a second time.

Recall that President Buhari after signing the electoral act amendment bill into law had complained about clause 84 (12) which disenfranchises political appointees.

Buhari thereafter forwarded a formal request to the national assembly for it to delete the clause.

Naija News gathered that lawmakers at the upper chamber who contributed to the debate on the bill kicked against the amendment.

2. APC Releases Zoning Arrangement, Zones Chairman, Secretary To North-Central, South-West

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday released its approved recommendations of the Committee on Zoning.

The party’s Director of Publicity, Salisu Na’inna Dambatta, confirmed the development in a statement obtained by Naija News today.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) after the committee on zoning headed by the Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq submitted its report.

According to Dambata, Zonal Representatives on the CECPC will coordinate the process in each zone.

3. You Have Put The Country On Auto-Run – ASUU Tackles Nigerian Government

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called out the federal government of Nigeria, accusing it of shying away from its responsibilities.

The ASUU chairman in the University of Ibadan, Prof Ayo Akinwole levelled the allegation at a press conference on Wednesday where he blamed the ongoing ASUU strike on the ineffectiveness of the government and argued that the union deserves all that they are demanding.

He submitted that rather than focus on critical issues of national development, those in power are more interested in having their egos massaged by sycophants.

Speaking further at the press conference held at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Prof Akinwole said the government has put the nation on auto-run and abandoned its responsibilities.

He described as frustrating, the fact that ASUU has been making the same demands from the federal government over the years and the country’s leaders have not been able to find a solution.

4. Federal Govt Bans Direct Sale Of Agricultural Produce To Foreigners

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its weekly meeting, on Wednesday, approved the establishment of an appropriate mechanism to protect the indigenous farmers in terms of achieving the right prices for their goods and commodities.

The mechanism will also ensure that famers have the appropriate incentives and the needed encouragement to guarantee their continued participation in the farming business.

To this end, FEC banned direct purchases of farm produce from farmers by foreigners who will now have to go through licensed local buying agents to do business with the farmers.

While briefing journalists at the end of the virtual meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House, Abuja, Minister of Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, said he presented two memos on behalf of his ministry before FEC one of which was the promotion of agribusiness in Nigeria through right farm gate pricing and ban on foreigners and their representatives from purchasing agricultural commodities at the farm gates directly.

5. Nigeria Is Just A Country, Needs To Become A Nation – Obasanjo

Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has submitted that until Nigeria moves away from being just a country to become a nation, it can’t develop at the appropriate level.

He said everyone must see themselves as part of the project called Nigeria for it to move forward.

Naija News understands Chief Obasanjo made the statement on Wednesday while speaking at the 2021/2022 School Debate Price Presentation Organised by the Vision Africa Radio Umuahia, Abia State.

He said Nigeria needs to move beyond just being a country and achieve nationhood.

6. Four Killed As Buhari’s CoS, Fashola, Ngige’s Convoy Crashes

Four policemen have been reported dead after the convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari‘s Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari; Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; and his counterpart in Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, crashed.

Naija News reports that the crash occurred on Tuesday evening during the inspection of a bridge in Asaba, Delta State.

An eyewitness, John Okorie, disclosed that the driver lost control of the vehicle conveying security operatives and crashed into a deep pit.

According to the witness, the incident occurred when the vehicle conveying the security operatives was negotiating a bend leading to the construction site of the Second Niger Bridge.

It was gathered that the vehicle veered off the road while it was speeding to meet up with the ministers’ vehicles.

7. APC Vs PDP: Gov Umahi, Deputy Appeal Sack Ruling

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi and his deputy, Kelechi Igwe on Wednesday appealed the ruling of an Abuja high court ordering their removal from office.

Umahi and Igwe disagreed with the ruling of the court in suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/920/2021 filed at the Abuja Judicial Division of the Appellate Court.

Recall that an Abuja High Court on Tuesday ordered their sack for dumping the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressive Congress.

The Ebonyi State Governor and his deputy listed eight grounds of appeal against the lower court’s judgment.

8. IGP Baba Confirms DIG Joseph Egbunike’s Death, Expresses Sadness

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has expressed sadness over the death of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Joseph Egbunike.

Naija News had earlier reported that Egbunike, who headed the Special Investigation Panel constituted to probe embattled police officer, Abba Kyari, slumped and died in his office in Abuja on Tuesday.

In a statement on Wednesday by the acting Force Public Relations Officer, Olumiyiwa Adejobi, IGP Baba said Egbunike died after a brief illness at the National Hospital, Abuja, on Tuesday night.

The police chief said the death of the senior police officer is a big loss to the country, the Nigeria Police Force and the security industry in the country.

Baba said Egbunike was a dedicated and seasoned police officer who served the nation in various capacities including as the Commissioner of Police in charge of Police Accounts and Budget.

He, however, condoled with the immediate family, relatives, and friends of the deceased DIG and prayed for the reposed of his soul.

9. Buni Not Coming Back As APC Chairman – El-Rufai Declares

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has declared that the fate of Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has been sealed and can’t return as the Chairman of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Naija News reports El-Rufai made the submission on Wednesday evening while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He added that the same thing applies to the CECPC Secretary, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe.

It will be recalled that the leadership saga within the APC took a new dimension on Monday when Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello took over the CECPC and declared himself as the acting chairman.

But on Wednesday, Governor El-Rufai submitted that Buni can only return as the Yobe State Governor and not as the APC Caretaker chairman.

He added that Bello has the backing of President Buhari and 19 governors.

10. Motorists Will Pay Levies To Ply Second Niger Bridge – FG

After completion, motorists would have to pay tolls to ply the Second Niger Bridge, the federal government has said.

The Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof Ibrahim Gambari, disclosed this yesterday in Asaba while inspecting major Federal Government legacy projects across the country.

The CoS, Naija News understands, was accompanied by the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN); his Labour and Employment counterpart, Dr Chris Ngige; Managing Director of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Mr Uche Orji and other top government officials.

Speaking on the Second Niger Bridge project which is near completion, Gambari said a National Tolling Policy has been drafted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in respect to the operation of the road.

According to him, if the road was tolled, there would be an alternative route, “so, when this bridge is tolled, the old bridge is an alternative route, so you have the choice to make between speed and price.”
