Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has opined that President Muhammadu Buhari had foreknowledge that the Senators would reject his request on re-amending the electoral act.

It would be recalled that Buhari after signing the electoral act into law, told the legislators that a section of the bill contravenes the provision of the constitution.

Naija News reports President Buhari wants the portion of the bill which bans serving political office holders from voting or being voted for at Conventions or Congresses of any political party expunged.

He observed that the part contravenes the provision in the country’s constitution which already states that such political office holders should resign, withdraw or retire at least 30 days before the date of the election.

Buhari urged the National Assembly to “consider immediate amendments that will bring the Bill in tune with constitutionality by way of deleting section 84(12) accordingly and later forwarded an official letter of request to that effect.

However, the Senators on Wednesday, rejected the request of President Muhammadu Buhari calling for a clause in the newly-signed electoral act to be deleted.

The lawmakers rejected the request of the president through a voice vote during plenary when it was tabled to be read a second time by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

Reacting to the development, Senator Sani said political office holders are now on their own as they have become victims of political deception between the President and the Senators.

He wrote on Twitter: “If you think that the President is not aware that the Senate will throw out the amendment of the electoral act, then you don’t know the art of political deception. The political appointees are now “on their own”.
