The embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has been granted permission to seek medical help after complaining of worsening health status.

Naija News reports that the former commander of the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, had dragged the Federal government to court over his continued detention in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

Abba Kyari had through his lawyer, Cynthia Obianuju Ikena, asked the court to order his release or alternatively set liberal bail conditions for him.

The police officer claimed to be suffering from chronic diabetes and hypertension threatening his life and therefore needs urgent medical attention.

Kyari said he cannot be managed while in the custody of the NDLEA, adding that he was being denied access to his personal doctor.

Ruling on the case on Monday, Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja, granted an order allowing Kyari to treat worsening hypertension and chronic diabetes affecting him.

The trial judge, however, denied the former IRT Commander bail and asked the NDLEA to keep him in its custody pending the outcome of an investigation into his involvement in the illicit drug business.

Justice Ekwo said the application had been overtaken by the order of the court given on February 22, which permitted the NDLEA to detain Kyari for another 14 days.

He said, “The only order I will make now is an order allowing the applicant access to any medical personnel of his choice.

“The court will wait for the expiration of the duration of the February 22 order of the court.”

Consequently, Justice Ekwo fixed March 15, 2022, for the hearing of Kyari’s fundamental human rights enforcement suit.
