Abba Kyari To Remain In Custody As Court Denies Bail Application

The embattled former head of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abba Kyari has been denied bail by the court.

Kyari’s bail application was denied on Monday by a federal high court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It will be recalled that following his arrest and subsequent transfer to the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for drug-related offences, Kyari had approached the court asking for bail on health grounds.

But giving the ruling on Monday, Justice Inyang Ekwo has denied the application.

Justice Ekwo held that the application has been overtaken by events following another court order granting NDLEA permission to hold Kyari for another 14 days to enable it to conclude its investigation.

It will be recalled that earlier in a ruling last Thursday, the presiding judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to respond to the request filed by the embattled police officer within 48 hours.

Earlier, counsel to the anti-narcotic agency, Mike Kasa, had informed the court that he had not been served with Abba Kyari’s bail request attached to his suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/182/22.

In a short judgement, the judge asked the parties to sort out themselves and appear before him on February 28 for the continuation of the case.

Before then, the embattled former commander of the Intelligence Response Team, IRT,Kyari had dragged the Federal government to court over his continued detention in the NDLEA custody.

Kyari had through his lawyer, Cynthia Obianuju Ikena, asked the court to order his release or alternatively set liberal bail conditions for him.

The police officer claimed to be suffering from chronic diabetes threatening his life and therefore needs urgent medical attention.

Kyari had accused the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of framing him for alleged dealing in cocaine trafficking.

Naija News recalls DCP Abba Kyari, was arrested by the Nigerian Police on February 14. He was arrested alongside four others on Monday.

The super cop arrest comes hours after National Drug Law Enforcement Agency declared he wanted over alleged drug links.

After his arrest, he was handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation.
