President Buhari Makes Fresh Appointment

There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari will sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law tomorrow (Wednesday).

Recall that the Presidential Spokesman, Femi Adesina, had earlier said that the President will assent to the re-worked electoral bill anytime soon.

“It could be today, it could be tomorrow, it could be anytime, but within the 30 days. It could be signed today; it could be signed tomorrow.

“In a matter of hours, not days. Hours could be 24 hours, it could be 48 hours; not days, not weeks,” he had said.

The National Assembly on January 31, transmitted the re-amended Electoral Act Amendment Bill to President Buhari for assent.

Sources in the Presidency have told Channels Television that President Buhari will likely sign the re-worked document tomorrow.

This development follows protests by civil society groups in Abuja over the President’s delay in signing the document ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The groups on Tuesday morning gathered and displayed various placards at the Unity Fountain asking the President to sign the bill.

Contentious Clause 84

It was learned that the Nigerian leader had reportedly refused to sign the bill due to the contentious Clause 84 of the document, which violates the constitutional rights of some Nigerians

The controversial clause bars political appointees from contesting elections and voting as delegates, either at conventions or congresses, after assenting to it.
