Why Buhari Hasn’t Signed Electoral Bill Revealed

The reason President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to sign the revised Electoral Act Amendment Bill has been revealed.

Naija News learned that the Nigerian leader has reportedly refused to sign the bill due to the contentious Clause 84 of the document, which violates the constitutional rights of some Nigerians.

The controversial clause bars political appointees from contesting elections and voting as delegates, either at conventions or congresses, after assenting to it.

A source told ThisDay that the President was waiting for the National Assembly leadership to assure him that the contentious 84 will be removed and the bill is revised again after signing it into law.

It was learned that Buhari came to the decision after he had a meeting on Sunday with the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Ahmed Idris Wase, and the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, in order to resolve the current impasse.

The source said the Nigerian leader asked the National Assembly leadership if they would be willing to remove the contentious aspect that violates Nigerians’ constitutional rights after he signs the bill to avoid further delay to the take-off of the bill.

But it was gathered that the leadership of the National Assembly could not assure the President if the contentious clause will be expunged from the bill.
