A 28-year-old woman, Justina Yakubu has reportedly been apprehended and arraigned after selling her baby for N120,000 in Yola, Adamawa.

The suspect and a nurse, Esther Romanus were remanded in prison by the Chief Magistrate Court in Yola, over alleged criminal conspiracy, buying or selling of person for immoral purpose.

Justina’s fiancee, Jamilu Suleiman had reported the missing child to the police after his partner came home from an unknown destination and told him the three month old had died.

During preliminary investigation it was discovered that the suspect sold her child and collected 20,000 as first payment. The baby was later found in the custody of Romanus of Jambutu, Yola North Local Government Area who planned with the mother to sell him.

When arraigned on Monday Justina pleaded guilty to the crime but Romanus stated she knew nothing about the incident.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Sawe Nicholas, informed the court that the father reported the incident on February 2 and revealed how the suspect had lied about the well-being of the child in a bid to hide her plans from the father.

The court adjourned the case to 25th February 2022 for ruling applied by the second defendant.
