Two Killed, Nine Injured As Truck Rams Into Police Checkpoint In Anambra

At least nine persons reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries when a speeding truck rammed into a police checkpoint in Anambra State.

Naija News understands that the horrible incident that happened on Friday, February 18, involved an orange Mercedes 911.

Two people were reportedly killed in the incident, the newspaper gathered.

Reports had it that the driver of the truck with number plate UWZ556XA was driving towards a petrol station when he lost control of his wheels and rammed into six other vehicles at Ken Maduako’s oil and gas filling station along the Ihialla-Onitsha road area of the state.

The cars affected were said to have queued up at a police checkpoint waiting for a pass before the truck lost its way and bashed them from behind.

Naija News learnt that the dead victims have been deposited at the morgue while the Federal Road Safety Corps rescue team from Ihiallia Unit Command rushed surviving victims to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiallia for proper medical examination.

The FRSC officials according to reports managed the traffic and ensured obstruction caused by the crash was removed.

Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander, Anambra State, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, commiserated with families of the deceased, warning motorists in the state to avoid overspeeding and ensure they keep to the recommended speed limit.

“Speed drills, but kills, check your speed and not your watch. Let us keep our roads safe from crash,” he warned.

Meanwhile, about 17 people have lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion along the Lagos-Ibadan highway, Ogun state.

The incident which reportedly occurred around 5 am on Friday, in the Isara area of the highway was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Florence Okpe, the spokesperson of the FRSC in Ogun stated that 17 bodies were recovered from the scene of the accident and 14 were burnt beyond recognition, Naija News reports.

She also said that the tanker and Mazda bus had a head-on collision and attributed the cause of the accident to reckless driving and violating traffic rules.

She said: “The total number of people involved is not ascertained, but a total 17 bodies have been identified.

“Ome male, one female, and one female child have been identified, while others were burnt beyond recognition and no injury sustained.
