1. ASUU Finally Declares Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday declared another round of strike action over the disagreements with the federal government of Nigeria.

The union declared a one-month total strike after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union in Lagos tagged ‘NEC for NEC.’

Naija News reports the academic union made its decision known at a press conference addressed by the President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, on Monday, 14th February 2022.

2. Abba Kyari In Fresh Trouble As NDLEA Declares Him Wanted

The embattled and suspended former head of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), DCP Abba Kyari has been declared wanted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Naija News gathered the embattled super-cop was declared wanted by the drug enforcement agency over links to some drug offences.

According to the spokesperson of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi during a press briefing on Monday, Kyari is being investigated over links to a global syndicate of drug dealers.

He added that Kyari has been invited several times by the agency but has failed to honour their invitation.

The accusation comes just a few months after the FBI indicted him as an accomplice to the international fraudster, Hushpuppi.

3. Police Confirm Abba Kyari Arrest, Hand Him Over To NDLEA

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) have confirmed the arrested of disgraced super cop DCP Abba Kyari over drug related offences.

Naija News reports that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had on Monday indicted the former IRT leader in the trafficking of cocaine, which subsequently led to his arrest by the police.

In a statement on Monday evening, Police Deputy PRO, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed that the Inspector General of Police, Baba Alkali Usman has ordered the immediate transfer of Abba Kyari and four orders to the NDLEA.

4. Makinde Okays Lekan Balogun As 42nd Olubadan

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Monday confirmed Senator Lekan Balogun as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Makinde approved Balogun’s appointment following a recommendation by the Olubadan-in-Council

This was made known in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, Naija News reports.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Lekan Balogun as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland,” Makinde said.

5. ASUU Declares Pantami’s Professorship Illegal

The professorship of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami has been declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities as illegal.

The decision was reached by the National Executive Council at a meeting held on Sunday night, while the President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, announced it at a press conference on Monday.

He said, “You cannot be a minister and a lecturer in a university. It is an encouragement of illegality.

“Pantami has to quit as a minister and be tried for doing double jobs within the same federal system. He is not qualified. Pantami should not be treated as a professor.”

6. NDLEA Confirm Arrest Of Abba Kyari, Four Others

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has confirmed the arrest of former IRT leader, Abba Kyari over drug related offences.

Naija News had earlier reported that NDLEA indicted the super cop on Monday, for involvement in a 25 kilograms cocaine deal.

The spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement released on Monday disclosed that the police handed Kyari over.

Others are ACP Sunday J. Ubua; ASP Bawa James; Inspector Simon Agirgba and Inspector John Nuhu.

He further stated that Kyari and others were driven into the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja at about 5 pm on Monday for interrogation and further investigation.

7. Abdulmalik Tanko Makes U-turn, Denies Killing Hanifa Abubakar

Abdulmalik Tanko, the alleged killer of five-year-old Hanifa Abubakar, on Monday denied killing the victim and pleaded not guilty.

Tanko who was accused of kidnapping and killing Hanifa denied the allegations levelled against him and two others in court.

The suspect had abducted Hanifa and subsequently killed her after demanding N6m ransom, at Dakata, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Tanko when paraded at Kano State Police Command had confessed that he kidnapped Hanifa and killed her with N100 rat poison before burying her remains in a shallow grave in one of his schools.

Tanko at the continuation of the trial denied the allegations that Hanifa was poisoned and buried in a school.

The suspects only responded to one-third of the charges read to them, which was a conspiracy.

8. Sunday Igboho Files ₦560m Suit Against Benin Republic

The Benin Republic has been sued by Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho before the Community Court of Justice, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) over his continued detention.

Igboho filed a suit demanding five hundred and sixty million Naira damages for each day he has been imprisoned in the Benin Republic.

He called on the court for an order awarding him general damages over the alleged violation of his human right by the Republic of Benin.

Igboho was arrested in Benin while trying to escape to Germany from the country after being raided at his Soka residence by the Department of State Services.

The Yoruba Nation agitator through his lawyer, Tosin Ojaomo sought an order declaring that his continued detention by Benin violates his dignity of the human person.

He said that the order sought is Under Article 59 of Rules of Procedure, an Expedited Procedure and Hearing, regarding the imprisonment and release of Chief Adeyemo.

9. 2023: What PDP Governors Told Buhari About Electoral Bill

The governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately assent to the revised Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law.

Naija News recalls that the president had declined assent to the bill, citing concerns that the compulsory direct primary for political parties “violates the spirit of democracy”.

The clause was later removed by the Senate and House of Representatives and the lawmakers introduced a clause allowing political parties to elect their candidates using direct, indirect or consensus methods.

The revised bill was subsequently transmitted to the President on January 31 by the Clerk of the National Assembly.

In a communique released on Monday after a meeting in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital, the governors advised the president not to wait for the 30 days duration allowed by the constitution to elapse before signing the electoral bill.

The PDP governors also asked the National Assembly to use the ongoing constitutional amendment to ensure that more powers are delegated to states and local governments.

According to the communique, the governors also condemned the inconsistency and insincerity of the federal government on the fuel subsidy regime, which has been badly and corruptly administered.

10. Abba Kyari: Police Also Indict NDLEA Operatives In Cocaine Scandal

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has accused operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of aiding the trafficking of drugs in the country.

The police stated this while calling the agency to immediately prosecute its officers who were believed to be conniving with international drugs cartel.

Naija News recalls that the NDLEA had on Monday in a press conference indicted former IRT leader, DCP Abba in the trafficking of cocaine, which subsequently led to his arrest by the police.

Confirming Kyari’s arrest in a statement on Monday evening, Police Deputy PRO, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi charged the NDLEA boss, Buba Marwa to also expose officers working for international cartels.
