The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has stated that the Southern region of the country is not against the North as perceived by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF).

Naija News reports that Afenifere made the submission in response to the criticism of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State by the Northern Elders.

Recall that the NEF had condemned the statement made by Akeredolu that any political party that fields a candidate from the North in 2023 would lose the election.

The NEF through its spokesman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, had said that Northerners had the right to contest for the presidential seat in 2023 and could also canvass support for a northern candidate against the South.

In a statement on Friday by its spokesman, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere said it supported that comment made by Governor Akeredolu and that the South should produce the next President.

The Yoruba group said Akeredolu’s declaration reflected the desire of the majority of ethnic nationalities in Nigeria, particularly, those in the South West, Middle Belt, South East and the South-South to have power returned to the South in 2023.

He said: “Nigeria belongs to all of us. The path we are treading is the one that will foster unity, fairness and harmonious relationship. As succinctly put by governor Akeredolu, what we, along with the southern governors, stand for is fair and equitable power rotation. The only fair thing is that after eight years in the North, the Presidency should come to the South.”
